Why is Montessori Teacher Training still relevant today?

Why is the Montessori method of education suitable for teachers of young children?

"Our educational aim must be to aid the spontaneous development of the mental, spiritual
and physical personality, and not to make of the child a cultured individual
in the commonly accepted use of the term.."
-Dr Maria Montessori -

Firstly the teacher discovers herself in terms of strength and weaknesses, hidden potentials and her views on child development. Then she will be guided through the Montessori's philosophy and Methods of education. Thus she will develop a deeper understanding of herself and the child and how they can work harmonically in a well prepared environment.

Are Montessori programmes recognised?

Thousands of Montessori schools and training centres have been set up throughout the world, since Maria Montessori started "to follow the child" and discovered her Method of Education almost a hundred years ago. More and more school teachers and parents are becoming interested in her approached to education. Many parents and educationists are following the footsteps of Dr. Montessori and recognize her great contributions to the field of children's development and education.

What does it take to start a Montessori school?

"During this early period, education must be understood as a help
to the unfolding of the child's inborn psychic powers.
This means that we cannot use the orthodox methods of teaching,
which depends on talk."

-Dr Maria Montessori -

The school must cater for each successive developmental plane and allows the child to take responsibility for himself under the guidance of a qualified Montessorian. Parental support is necessary to start an effective school for young children as Montessori schools are not play centers but a place where children's development needs are met.

Is a Montessori programme expensive to set up and run?

Like any new programme it does cost money to set up from the scratch. However the cost of setting up varies according to the size, location and needs of the individual school. The Montessori materials may look expensive, and some individual items do seem expensive but the quality in design ensures that material is made to last indefinitely provided that it is not abused. A trained Montessorian teacher is required to effectively used these teaching aids.

Can I use Montessori programme for children with learning disabilities? What about gifted children?

Montessori is designed to help all children regardless of their abilities or gifting. To help them to reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace.

A well prepared environment with a spiritually prepared directress, children of different abilities can work harmoniously together by supporting one another. It is also important to get parental support in order for us to see the beauty of a classroom where children are actually working in a community of different gifting and talents.

A trained Montessorian teacher can also conduct special classes for these children in the enrichment programmes
